About the event

The audience can expect to hear vivid memories of a time gone by through the songs and stories of Marion Counsel, the creator of Red Island Resettlement Girl. As the title suggests, Marion grew up on Red Island in Placentia Bay but left her childhood home when the government implemented its Resettlement Program in the 1960s. Through song and recitations, with the accompaniment of the beautiful voice of Barbara O’Keefe and exquisite harmonies, Marion brings the audience back to that faraway world of isolation, family life, fishing traditions, and the joys and sorrows of lives lived on the island. What was Christmas like? What kind of school did they have? Running water? Electricity? What happened when they left the island and transitioned to the town of Placentia with its cars, store bought sliced bread and ready-made boxed chicken? With humour, music and stories, Marion takes you on an unforgettable journey…
